Coachella Valley Unified School District
Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) provides a wide range of academic programs to prepare all students for college, career, and community success. Our district is committed to ensuring equitable access to rigorous coursework, specialized pathways, and support programs that help every student reach their fullest potential.
University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) ‘A-G’ Requirements
The ‘A-G’ subject requirements represent the minimum set of courses students must complete with a grade of C or better to be eligible for admission to a University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU). Students must complete 15 required courses, with at least 11 finished prior to their senior year. These requirements may also be met through approved college courses or qualifying scores on AP, SAT Subject, or IB exams.
Advanced Placement (AP)
The Advanced Placement (AP) program follows the College Board curriculum and provides rigorous, college-level coursework in high school. These courses prepare students for the AP exams administered each May. Successful completion of AP exams may qualify students for college credit or advanced placement at many universities.
College Preparatory (CP)
College-preparatory courses focus on academic rigor and college readiness. These classes align with post-secondary expectations and ensure students are equipped for university-level studies.
English Language Development (ELD)
ELD courses support English learners in acquiring and mastering the English language. Through targeted instruction and scaffolding, students build proficiency to fully participate in academic coursework taught in English.
Honors Program (H)
Honors courses are accelerated and challenge students beyond standard coursework. These classes encourage critical thinking and advanced study habits, demonstrating a student’s readiness for rigorous academic experiences.
Four-Year University Entrance Requirements (‘A-G’ Subject Areas)
The following table summarizes UC and CSU ‘A–G’ subject requirements:
Students seeking UC or CSU admission must complete 15 college-preparatory courses in history/social science, English, math, science, language, arts, and electives. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is required (3.4 for nonresidents). To verify approved UC courses, visitDoorways UCOP Education.
High School Graduation Requirements
The following table outlines CVUSD high school graduation course and credit requirements:
To earn a diploma from CVUSD, students must complete 220 credits and meet all subject and course requirements outlined by the Board of Education and California state law.
Weighted GPA Calculation
The district uses a standardized weighted GPA system to recognize students who pursue academically rigorous coursework, including Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and Dual Enrollment college classes.
1. Grade Point Conversion:
A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0
2. Weighted Courses:
• Honors: +0.5 points for grades C or higher (A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5)
• AP: +1.0 point for grades C or higher (A=5, B=4, C=3)
• Dual Enrollment: +1.0 point for grades C or higher (A=5, B=4, C=3)
3. GPA Calculation Method:
Convert all final semester grades into grade points using the weighted scale, total all grade points, and divide by the number of courses taken.
4. Notes:
Pass/Fail grades are excluded from GPA calculations. UC does not recognize 9th-grade honors for weighting unless designated AP.Educational Options
Credit Recovery: Students can make up credits or improve grades through Apex Learning or Subject online platforms.
Dual and Concurrent Enrollment: Students may take college classes while in high school. Dual enrollment courses occur during the school day and are taught by college faculty. Concurrent enrollment courses take place outside regular hours, either on high school or college campuses. These courses require enrollment in the college.

Course Description: In this ninth grade honors literature course, we will take a critical journey through Chican@ Literature in the United States. We will explore a rigorous analysis of how this literature affects, documents, and creates Chican@ identities, politics, and the epistemologies/subjectivities of Chican@s in America. We will also use critical performance pedagogy to engage particular problems in the literature and in the community. Through group/team work, community service, and interactive lectures and discussions we will delve into the analysis, accessibility, and application of Chican@ literature. This course will explore critical questions around the issues of--and intersections between--gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, language, religion, tradition, colonization, access, citizenship, migration, culture, ideology, epistemology, politics, and love. The main questions that we try to tackle in this course are: How does Chican@ literature represent, challenge, and/or change traditional notions of the Chican@ experience? How can literature be used to activate the possibilities of decolonization, activism, and social justice? The course will also consider key literary concepts that shape and define Chicano literary production. By the end of the class, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the literary and historical formation of Chican@ identity and the complex, even contradictory, experiences that characterize Chican@ culture.
